I always feel right at home every time I visit Macks Farm in Davie, Florida. The lush landscape is filled with an abundance of nourishment for the body, mind and soul. For decades Ms. Barbara and her amazing family team have grown vital crops and sustenance for the community to enjoy. Depending on the day, you might even enjoy a plate of her delicious food. What inspired you to start Macks Farm?
The knowledge started as a child with my grandparents, but upon reflection as an adult it’s important to eat right, walk right , drink right be right in everything we do. I tried other things in life but God always brought me back to where I started. That is with farming. It is my roots. It is in me and I want to be an inspirational object to others especially women.
What do you enjoy most about farming?
Teaching people how to survive and eat right from the earth.
Describe a typical day on the farm?
Rain or shine we start the day with prayer and devotion. Everything else that follows is not typical.
What’s been one of the biggest learning lessons you’ve learned since starting?
We are not actually farming plants, But we are taking care of Microscopic organisms in the ground. That is what really allows crops to grow. And learning to appreciate soil biology. Example ( worms, bugs and microscopic organisms that can’t be seen through the naked eye).
What are your top 3 favorite crops?
Calaloo red and green, it is home plus all its benefits. okra, red and green, (good for joints and all its benefits especially to women) and sugar cane( good for energy, strength, and vigor).
What’s in season on your farm?
Calaloo, and laloo ( jute leaves).
